Production

The $50 million marketing budget means they had a shed load of moneys to pay for promotion.

Battleship is a 2012 American science fiction naval war film based on the children’s game. It’s demographic is a wide audience. Universal Pictures released it; a massive company, this made the budget $200 million. There are some huge names in the cast, this would make people want to see it even more. Made by Hasbro, the company that made the original game.

Universal Pictures control all stages of the film process: production, distribution, exhibition. This means all profit goes back into the company. Universal Studios is one of the six major Hollywood studios.

Starring in the film are Taylor Kitsch as Alex Hopper; Brooklyn Decker as Sam, Hopper's fiancée; Liam Neeson as Admiral Shane, Sam's father and Hopper's superior officer; and Alexander Skarsgård announced as his brother Stone Hopper. These are all quite famous people, some more than others, not just in the film industry. This would bring in more potential viewers.
